Well, here's my first list of tasks that I'm going to throw out there for any brave souls who want to contribute to this project. Check out my ideas, see what you think, and let me know. If you're interested in trying your hand at anything, I love and applaud you, and ask that you leave a comment below telling me what you want to do.

In Depth character bios on the main characters – It would be great if someone wanted to take their favorite characters (it could be any character, but it’s a bit easier if they appear frequently in the books) and write a detailed description of their role in the books, their family relationships, their histories, and any kind of character analysis they could come up with. (It might be a good idea to follow the guidelines at idol_reflection, because they may be able to post whatever they write over there, and thereby pimp our fandom even more ;) They guidelines for the community are found here, and if you’d like more info on the community, you can read about it here.)

********Just a quick note: this task is for in depth character commentary only. I’m already in the middle of a compilation of all the characters in the books, and some basic info about them. In depth commentary is different...'cause it's more in depth. :)

Timelines – Anything you want to make a timeline about, I’m all for it. I think if would be great to have one master timeline for the series as a whole. It can be divided into parts for people to work on as they choose, or one person can attempt the daunting task of working out the chronology alone. (I’d advise the former!) I’m going to be pretty harsh with moderating and writing the timelines and having them accurate, unless the books prove too erratic to actually map out correctly. Still, I think it’s important to be as exact as we can here, so this section will probably be one of the more challenging. (If your wondering what kind of standard I'm setting, check out the timelines at the Harry Potter Lexicon for reference; they're amazing.)

Gods and Goddesses – Since there are many gods and goddesses mentioned throughout the books, it would be nice to round them all up in their own tidy section. This way, when we want an effective curse word for our characters, we know exactly where to look. I would suggest for this section that each god or goddess be labeled as Attolia/Sounisian (they share a pantheon, right?) or Eddisian. Also, any associations that are made in the books can be noted in this section as well. (i.e. Eugenides being the half-son of the Earth, sister of Hephestia, brother of Lyopidus, ect) Perhaps a family tree for the deities? That would be fun.

Geography – This one, I’m guessing, will prove to be quite difficult. I think it would be awesome if someone wanted to put together what information we are given in the books about setting, and extrapolate some kind of visual representation. This could mean drawing maps, art that depicts the scenery of a particular area, or anything. Ideas for maps could include: Attolia, Sounis, Eddis (or any combination of the three), the lands surrounding these countries, the palace of Attolia, the prison in Sounis, the palace of Eddis, political boundaries, resource maps (elementary school!), or physical landforms. All of these would be great references to include in our archives, and we could add write-ups to go with each picture.

Character profiling - fabricalchemist and mycenaeth made the wonderful suggestion
of adding artwork to the archives. If any talented people would like to try their hand at doing character portraits we could include the artwork among the written compilations, and also add it to our art archive that mycenaeth has begun to put together. Of course, art of any character would be accepted and appreciated, so go wild!

Thank you all so much for being here and supporting. I love knowing that people are interested in this idea, so keep the feedback (postive, and negative) coming my way. I'm happy to change things for the better, so if you've got ideas don't hold back.

Thank you again. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I absolutely want a map! The geographical arrangement of the countries has been the one thing I've never been able to get straight in my head...it changes from book to book.

I'll see what I can cook up :) This will be an excellent I'm-online-and-bored-like-whoa project!

Question: Are we going to post this stuff, to sort of jury it? Obviously we wont be able to get it to everyone's liking, as our individual brains fill in details of the stories so everyone's experience is different, but I think we should all agree on the entries to some extent. Does that makes sense?

Personally, I know I'll be absolutely no help making a map. I'm simply terrible at trying to visualize a place I've never seen. So, if you're able to work on that, I'll be bowing at your feet!

Answer: All of the posts in this community are moderated, so if I approve them (and I almost certainly will, unless it's off-topic) they get posted here. From then on out anyone can comment on the post and make suggestions for changes/additions/improvements. From there, the creator of the post can make the good corrections at their own discretion. (Kind of like Wikipedia.) I plan to consider everything that goes here at the lj as our rough draft, so to speak. We're polishing all of our stuff up and bouncing ideas off of each other in order to get in nice and shiny for the final product: the web site. Good question though; thinking all of this though to explain has helped clarify it in my mind as well.

I love your Gods and Goddesses idea. I'm not sure if Attolia and Sounis share a pantheon, but there's no suggestion to the contrary in the books. :) In the Thief it simply mentioned splitting the Gods into the ancient set, and the set that the invaders brought with their religion. A family tree sounds like a fantastic idea, though it'd be fairly small to start with. :)

I wouldn't mind having a go at helping with that section (or any others, though I doubt you'll have a shortage of volunteers). :) I warn you in advance though, I suck at most computor things. The best I'd probably be able to do is compile the information and type it up.

Um, I also second fabricalchemist's question, are we going to jury this stuff? It sounds like a good idea. And also, as well as quoting the associations from the books in the Gods and Goddesses section, would it be worth mentioning any possible associations with ancient greek and roman deities?

I'm going to go look at the Harry Potter Lexicon to refresh my memory. I remember it being an excellent site. :D And again, I'm so glad that you thought of making a site like this. It should be fantastic when it's finished. :)

I'm glad some of the ideas are catching your fancy. :)

If you'd like to work on the gods and goddesses, that would be wonderful. Many of them appear in The Thief, of course, but you'd have to look through the other books as well to find all that have been mentioned so far. (I've got the ones in KOA with names and page numbers, if you'd like them. Let me know!) If you want to start this section, I would recommend getting a running list of all the gods and goddesses named in the books, putting them into order (alphabetical?), then classifying them as Attolia/Sounisian/Eddisian or whatever and write up a short bit about what context they appear in the books in. Some will be longer, of course (Eugenides, Earth and Sky, ect), but some will be really short too, so hopefully it won't be too hard. If that sounds like a good start, I can't wait to see what you are able to work out.

I think the idea of including association with real greek and roman deities is an amazing idea. That way, people looking to expand on a god or goddess character in fanfiction will be able to take ideas from the original source. Perhaps, if you can identify a corresponding deity, we can link to an outside website for now, and then eventually do our own research and write up our own summaries. Plus, as visual refrences we can include artwork done of exsiting gods/godesses and note that they do correspond so MWT may have imagined the charcter to look something like that. Great, great idea.

Sorry for the longness, but hopefully this will give you some good suggestions. Just do whatever you feel like, no pressure of course. I appreciate any help you guys can offer!

I would like to work on the gods and goddesses, if you don't mind the fact that some of my replies are inevitably going to be a few days late. :)

That sounds like a great idea, I'll start that. :) I'll work through the books and see what I'm able to glean. I'll stick the mystery goddess from QoA at the end of the list. I've just finished skimming the books, and it's surprising how few gods and goddesses we've seen. No more than ten or so, including the ones mentioned in passing in stories.

*grins* I'm glad you like it. I'll include possible associations then. Something else that hit me today was the similarity of certain other mythical characters to characters within the books. Gen, for example, bears a strange resemblance in some ways to Odysseus (called Ulysses in Latin). :) It's probably be a coincidence, but I thought I'd mention it.

:) Your suggestions are fantastic. I'll start it sometime tonight, should be done in about a week.

Awesome! I actually started a mini timeline for the Thief a while back when I was trying to figure out exactly how old Gen would be at the time of that book. I would be interested in trying to piece that together to get us started (any help is welcome!) The profiles are an awesome idea as well. =3

The map part is harder, because I think the map I have in my head is going to be different than anyone elses. rofl. We could have several maps though, showing the way different users see the geography. ^_^

Anyways, I'll be glad to help any way I can! *smile*

I actually started a mini timeline for the Thief

That's so great! Want to type it up and post it here as a starting off point for the rest of our timelines? If you want to take over that section for now that would be amazing. Just post whatever you have and we can all put in our two cents.

Maps are going to be impossible for me, so I'll have to rely on much more talented court members when it comes to that area. :)

Thanks so much for your offer to help; you've done so much already! I appreciate all of this *so* much!

Will do. Right now I'm just doing it from memory as I only have the QoA with me and have to reread it to look some of the stuff up, but I'll post what I have so far. =3

Hello, I've only just found this and I'm a bit annoyed no one pointed it out to me before because it's a great idea.

I would love to do some in-depth character bios. Could I do Teleus? I'm not sure how good I'll be at this and I wouldn't know where to start with Irene or Gen! I think I could manage doing Teleus. (Plus, I think Jade will want Costis.)

Are we still working on this?

Dannybailey, are you still around?

May I humbly offer my map? (the same one that was posted to Sounis a few months back)It'd be nice to have some more stuff on this comm :D

It has Eddis, Attolia, and Sounis on it, and is as detailed and geographically correct as I could make it.

Err, in short, it's one of a thousand possibilities for the layout of the countries.
7th-May-2009 03:38 am (UTC)
Yes! I'm still around, although flighty. :)

Please, do offer your map! (It's a very, very lovely map.) It would be awesome, and a perfect addition to the community. It's exactly the sort of thing that I was thinking of when I started the comm. Is it alright with you if I make the post? Just let me know if there are any notes or comments that you would like to go with it, and I'll put them in a shiny new post. (Don't worry, I'll be sure to credit profusely!)

Thanks for the heads up to get my butt back here! And for your interest. :)

Of course you can make the post! I'm happy to be saved from attepting my own introduction. I don't really have much more to add than what I said in the Sounis post (link: http://community.livejournal.com/sounis/213657.html#cutid1) but I have found three places I missed since I drew that map, and they are: Silver mines south of Sounis' capital, the island of Solon, and 'the Modrea' in Attolia, which is where Relius imagined himself raising goats.

I love the idea of the Megaron! It sounds like you had a Harry Potter Lexicon-ish vision for it, which I absolutely love the sound of. Obsessively categorising things is such fun. I'd be interested in doing a character profile, if you like, but it'd have to wait till my mid-year break.

Thanks :D

Can I do a in-depth analysis on Irene? *Pretty Please*
